COVIMETRY

At the Ely Centre, Contemporary Art New haven USA

APRIL 19 - JUNE 6 2021 Virtual Exhibition Curated by Mark Starel and Suzan Shutan

Living with a lifelong passion for Geometry and year-long isolation from the devastating pandemic Covid, artist and curator Mark Starel of Warsaw Poland brought the two together (geometry & mask) with his newest exhibit COVIMETRY.

Today human survival is dependent upon our using an “antivirus” mask covering our most noted communication tool, our mouths, along with noses and much of our face. The mask has hindered our ability to read others expressions and feelings. By adopting the mask as a template and canvas, it now becomes a form for expression- even if just a fragment of a bigger picture of our times metaphorically.

Starel also brought together over 300 artists, uniting continents and likeminded geo-zealots. His intention is to grow the exhibit until it reaches 1000 artists, representing every country as a global community. Different artistic strategies are conveyed, exploring the shape and structure of the mask through the inclusion of a variety of media, styles and techniques that allow for contemporary notions of how geometry is being investigated today.

Slow Art Day

APRIL 5 2019

MARLENE SARROFF :

BŚA PROJECT SPACE

Byron School of Art Mullumbimby N.S.W.

After Starting the day with my Artist Talk. participants began something organizers called The Slow Art Challenge. The challenge started with five minutes of silent looking at one artwork, then followed that with a group discussion. Next, participants took a few moments to enjoy cups of tea together, and then reconvened in pairs to observe a second chosen work in silence. For the final segment, they listened to music while looking at another artwork, and then held another discussion after that multi-sensory experience. The Slow Art Day finished with an evening Slow Flow Yoga Class led by yoga instructor Shien Chee. Chee and Meredith Cusack, BSA Project Space Coordinator, wanted to integrate yoga, sound, smells, and sight. They came up with the idea of using the art as a way to talk about drishti (gaze point). As a result, Chee built her class around changing drishti – looking at different works, but also from different positions, and heights. AN EXCELLENT INSPIRING DAY.

Marlene Sarroff : Diffusion A dynamic combination of material, form, and line playfully scatter across the surface indicating movement, randomness, a sense of playfulness with everything in Flux. This work has evolved from several found fine linear metal frames encased by clear plastic with an imprinted grid embedded into it. Layers of thick tape and a thin line plastic is juxtaposed behind the gridded plastic to ptoduce a series of line drawings that are presented as a series. (Statement: Catalogue)
