ARTIST STATEMENT

The ongoing concerns of my work is exploring the idea that Western Science/Physics and Eastern Philosophies, share similar metaphysical notions and that order and chaos are both in competition and co-exist with one and other. The basic elements of the universe are dynamic patterns, of which, the transitory stages are in constant flow of transformation and change. The universal flux manifests into a richness, diversity and beauty of life all around us. This work Patterns of Consciousness, is investigating the notion of “self” as constantly changing experiences. The strong presence of the work embodies an ever present spiritual dimension motivated from a position of meditative concentration. The structure of process begins with the use of an ordinary material such as builders tar paper, despite being an industrial product, a transformation occurs and creates, something new and illuminating. A metaphor for the transforming energies of life. The paper is scratched into a repetitious pattern and then burnt through with a soldering iron creating spontaneous random patterns that builds a static and dynamic tension. Backed with a reflective canvas backed foil material, the work reveals jewel like patterns that represent transitory moments that ascend to new levels of cosmic reality and spiritual transformation. The work extending over several panels and remaining in its natural state the paper takes on a scroll like appearance. As the viewer engages with the work, each physical movement, produces transitory changes as the reflective patterns emerge and disappear.

This work was developed during my Masters Degree at the Sydney College of the Arts. 2006
